Ministry in Human Sexuality participated in or led a number of activities and projects over its seven-year existence.
We worked with a task force from the Nebraska Conference of The United Methodist Church to present a conference on Counseling Homosexual Persons and Their Families, in conjunction with the University of Nebraska Division of Continuing Studies. Dr. David Switzer, Professor of Pastoral Theology at Perkins School of Theology in Dallas, was the presenter, and co-author with his wife Shirley of Parents of the Homosexual.
Another project of MHS included facilitating the formation of a "Joint Strategy and Action Team" of Interchurch Ministries of Nebraska on Ministry with Homosexual Persons and their Families. These IMN teams were always ecumenical, and this one had several denominations participating, including United Methodist. The JSAT hosted two conferences on Ministry with Homosexual Persons.
The first conference featured Dr. David Switzer, Professor of Pastoral Theology at Perkins School of Theology and was presented in Omaha and Kearney.
The second conference was held in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the Unitarian Church, on February 28-March 1, 1986. It was sponsored by seven organizations and was called Spirituality and Homosexual Persons: A Dialog Conference. It featured Bishop Melvin Wheatley, an outspoken and a lone voice on the United Methodist Council of Bishops in the 1970s and 1980s. A recording of his speech is here in 40kbps (21MB) and 80kbps (42MB) quality. Transcript (1.3mB), with copy of program at which it was delivered.
