Obituary, In Loving Memory Of Enid Talton Roe

Enid Talton Roe, daughter of Adolphus Wiltz and Ileta Dennett (Frank) Talton, was born December 11, 1921, in El Dorado, Arkansas, and passed away at her home in Norton, Kansas, on August 21, 2002, at the age of 80.

She grew to womanhood in Mansfield, Arkansas and attended the grade and high schools there, graduating in 1939. She also graduated from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas in 1941. She married Joseph Benjamin Roe on August 31, 1942 in Texarkana, Arkansas. They made their home in Illinois where Enid graduated from Northwestern University in 1946. Arkansas and Nebraska. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1973 and Kearney State College in Kearney, Nebraska in 1980. She attended the St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri and Scarritt College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1983. She taught in the public schools in Illinois and Nebraska and was the Director of Student Services in the Lincoln Public Schools from 1975-76. They moved to Norton in 1985 and Enid was a special education teacher until 1991. Her husband, Joseph, passed away March 30, 1987, and she continued to make her home in Norton.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Norton, United Methodist Women, and a Diaconal Minister of the Kansas West Conference of The United Methodist Church. She had taught Sunday School for many years, served as a church librarian, secretary, and camp counselor for junior high camp. She was the founder and president of Norton CARES, and was a member of PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma, Phi Delta Gamma, NEA, KNEA-R, Kappa Kappa Iota, AAUW, and women's extension and garden clubs. She had also been a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout assistant.

Survivors include: one son, J. Benjamin Roe, D.Min., and wife Maggie Roe, M.Div. Denver, Colorado; one daughter, Deborah and Daniel Stratmann, M. Div., Pacific, Missouri, one grandson, Andrew Campbell, Pacific, MIssouri, one sister, Carol and husband, Robert Joyce, Mansfield, Arkansas, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two daughters, Rebecca Louise Roe and Phyllis Carol Roe, Th.D., one son-in-law, S. Michael Anderson, Th.D. and three brothers, Adolphus Wilta, Joel, and Cullen.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 24, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Norton with Pastor Lew Van Der Wege officiating. Soloist, David Will, sang "Above The Hills" and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" with Rosetta McFarland as organist. Rosetta also accompanied the congregational hymns of "Spirit Song," "For All The Saints," and "Precious Lord Take My Hand."

Casket bearers were Jim Green, Lary Stull, Chuck Look, Jake Durham, Ed Lawrence, and Doug Sebelius. Honorary casket bearers were Joan Knoll, Peggy Stoll, Kandi Sproul, Karla Griffey, Beverly Kindler, Doris Winteroth, Mary Beth Boyd, and Kathleen Schemper.

Graveside services were held Monday, August 26, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fairview Cemebery in Lincoln, Nebraska, with Pastor Lew Van Der Wege officiating.

Memorials were established to the Roe Family Scholarship Fund at Nebraska Wesleyan University and Norton CARES.
Arrangements were with the Endfield Funeral Home of Norton.
