Worldwide Web Work
I have had experience building and maintaining web sites: my own (first static html, now CMS-based), Western Methodist Justice Movement, Warren United Methodist, Reconciling Congregation Program (predecessor to Reconciling Ministries Network), Rocky Mountain Conference (at first static html, CMS-based at my retirement); Affirmation: United Methodist; and United Methodist Men. Tools used included: text editors, html editors, FrontPage, DreamWeaver, FTP, Joomla!. I worked with Ideaworks, Inc., on a small business web site.
Communications Admin
I worked at the offices of the Rocky Mountain Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church in Greenwood Village, CO, from September, 2001 to May, 2010. My job entailed work with databases, the web, e-newsletters, and during the school year, supervising an advanced field ed student from Iliff School of Theology. I put several lists on-line that come out of our office database (churches, pastors, churches on web, etc.), using PHP and MySQL.
Applications Programmer
I was an Applications Programmer for 7 years at Monitor Labs, Inc., a company that manufactures air pollution monitoring equipment and systems. Though I enjoyed the UNIX-related part of my job, and got pretty good at the regulatory side of it, I left as I felt it was time to put my skills to work for the church.
At Monitor Labs, I provided technical support, troubleshooting, and training for Data Acquisition Systems (DAS) on the UNIX and Windows NT platforms. These computer applications collect data from gas analyzers that are monitoring various combustion products and stores it for later reporting.
I worked with customers wherever in the world they might be, usually by phone and modem, to configure, modify, or fix problems with their DAS. In the United States, this was usually power plants and other sites which had some combustion process that the EPA and state air quality regulatory agencies require monitoring.
I was trained as an ISO 9001 internal auditor and helped develop and maintain a process for continuous quality improvement in the Software Services department based on the ISO 9001 standard, which is a certification in quality compliance and improvement. I also worked with sales and engineering spreadsheets and documents.
United Methodist Minister
I was ordained in the Nebraska Conference and served in the Jefferson County Larger Parish and in the PEACE Parish, near Lincoln, as well as interim ministry. In 1980, I founded Ministry in Human Sexuality, serving as Executive Director until 1988. I enjoyed teaching, doing workshops, advocating for sexuality education, those who experience disabilities, and GLBT folk, and an active sexuality and pastoral counseling practice. I wrote articles for a singles newspaper and other publications, presented a paper on mixed orientation marriages, and planned cooperatively a series of workshops for those dealing with disability and sexuality. These activities are reflected in my Curriculum Vitae.
Media Center Technician
For a couple of years, I worked as the reading monitor and recording technician for the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped at the Nebraska Library Commission in Lincoln. This involved coaching and monitoring readers and editing the tapes for duplication onto cassettes. Earlier, in seminary, I was also a media center tech, maintaining projectors and the videotape machines used primarily for preaching classes.
Radio/Cable TV Engineer
I enjoyed programming and announcing a classical music show on an FM station and reading news and monitoring the transmitter at a country music station, both in Lincoln. During seminary, I kept an automated easy-listening FM station happy with music and news. I used my First Class Radiotelephone license at these jobs logging required transmission parameters. In college, I engineered a closed-circuit campus radio station.
Near the end of seminary, I worked at a cable TV station recording and editing public access programs and engineering the playback of movies for a premium movie channel. And in the Nebraska Conference, I edited a series of videos on the family farm.
